Pan pipes (111055)

The pan pipes, found in 1876, have a sound-box decorated with three shrines, which it is thought represent a frons scaenae; in the upper part, there are nine pipes of different heights: they are linked in the lower part and have a hole near the mouthpiece. The object, which underwent major restoration in the nineteenth century, is so large that it was presumed that it worked with the aid of a special machine. The use of the pan pipes was linked to satirical drama and myth, though musical instruments were generally used in ritual ceremonies such as the Isiac processions, during which the worshippers shook the sistrum or, alternatively, they were used during theatrical shows or to brighten up banquets. It should be remembered that, in antiquity, music was probably not considered as an autonomous discipline from acting.

Baked clay figurine of nude winged male in a cloak playing a set of Pan-pipes; originally covered in a white slip which acted as a ground for applied coloured pigments; one wing missing and much of the slip worn away.

Description
Pottery: black-figure hydria. Design in black on a red panel, with borders of dots down the sides; no accessories. No marked distinction in shape between neck, shoulder, and body, though the body is somewhat more cylindrical than usual for the form. The handle has a high loop, terminating at the upper juncture in a cross-piece.
A Maenad advancing to right between Satyrs; she has long hair with a fillet, long chiton, lyre in left hand. The Satyr in front looks back, with right hand raised; the one behind has a syrinx (pan pipes) in left hand, right extended. In the field, branches.

Description
Limestone statue of the god Pan or Opaon Melanthios wearing a goatskin over his tunic, holding a large crook in his left hand and a syrinx (Pan pipes) in his right; he stands frontally, legs broken away at knee-level; oval face with smiling lips; animal ears and horns (broken) rise through his long curly hair; his short tunic is secured at the waist, over which is a goatskin-cloak fastened at the breast with knotted animal hooves; made of cream-coloured shelly limestone, traces of red striped decoration on the drapery.
